Description
The installation for this experimental mapping project explores paper as a material of memory, in which landscape and artefact are interchangeable and recorded as fragments, imprints, and residues across multiple scales of place and time. As the landscape is subjected to the extractive forces of the global papermaking industry, so the handmade paper produced for this installation is subjected to forces of bending, folding, tearing… even burning – employed as visceral drawing tactics, which the paper itself ‘remembers’.
Suggestive of pages of a book, stratigraphic sections through a landscape, or even the skeleton of a body, this installation, an atlas, is suspended in time and space, in which paper is the landscape, the artefact, and the laboratory. It is perhaps from this apparent fragility that robust conversations around alternate methods for reading, thinking, and making could emerge; where relationships to landscape, climate, and each other could be reframed and reimagined.
