La profezia dell’armadillo
Synopsis
Zero lives in the suburb of Rebibbia, Tiburtina Valley. Land of mammoths, acetate tracksuits and big hearts. Zero is a cartoonist but without a regular job, he muddles along from one piece of work to the next.
His life always goes on in much the same way but, once he gets home, he finds his critical conscience waiting for him: an armadillo that, in conversations verging on the absurd, keeps him up to date with what is going on in the world. Zero is kept company on his daily wanderings by his friend Secco.
The death of Camille, a girl he knew at school and his undeclared teenage love, obliges him to sort out his life and to face up, with his irreverent spirit, to the inability to communicate, doubts and lack of convictions of his “marginalised” generation.
Director’s Statement
“People in their thirties no longer exist, like gnomes, the dodo and Eskimos. Now there is adolescence, post-adolescence and the mass grave. Thirtysomethings are an outdated category, for which we feel a nostalgic attachment, like we do for a regular job.” Zero’s generation grew up at a time when the over-thirties were viewed as adults, with a precise place in the world. Today those who have reached thirty find themselves caught in a limbo: seesawing between one odd job and the next, living with their parents or having to reinvent themselves continually.
Zero lives in Rebibbia, a place that is talked about only when something happens to get it in the news. But in Rebibbia people work, get married, grow up and sometimes even die. It is the places where ordinary people live that interest me. An unusual part of the city, not the picture-postcard centre – where Zero and Secco refuse to go – but a metropolis of the world where the social classes are mixed up.
La profezia dell’Armadillo is also a small tribute to the fictional universe with which Zero and Secco’s generation grew up. Movies like The Goonies or Stand by Me. The armadillo is our gremlin.
