Synopsis

The film comprises five episodes that capture the essence of Neapolitanism. In Il Guappo, Totò hopes to have finally freed himself from a bully who has been living in his house for ten years. In Pizze a credito, Sophia Loren is a beautiful pizza maker determined to cheat on her husband. In I giocatori, Vittorio De Sica is an impoverished nobleman and gambling addict who is reduced playing cards with the janitor’s son. In Teresa, Silvana Mangano is a prostitute from the Castelli Romani whom a handsome and rich young suitor wants to marry. In Il professore, Eduardo De Filippo spreads wisdom, but above all he is a master in the art of raspberry, and uses it to mock the snooty neighbourhood aristocrat.

Director’s Statement

Naples is so deeply felt by Marotta and me that I believe that in the film it will emerge for what it is, what it has always been; in fact, one of the mysteries of Naples lies in its immutability over the centuries, so that the people of Naples with their customs, their habits, their philosophy will never change. I hope that the film has respected the spirit of Marotta’s book; and anyhow Marotta himself, who worked on the script with Zavattini and me, was the most avid defender of his stories.
