Golfam Khayam - Sâz
Sâz is a musical narrative that goes through various phases to link Persian musical material within a Western contemporary personal language. Sâz is a Persian word for musical instrument where it is seeking the essence of music through different layers, from past to now, East to West; the whole program is a suite-like piece with connected movements, the whole piece is reframing traditions: from western Renaissance and baroque improvisatory forms, ornaments, modes, making hidden bridges towards parallel Persian musical varied sources, as Dastgah music and ethnic Persian regional instrumental practices. These instrumental musical sources bring ornamentations, rhythmic patterns, phrases and melodies which are rooted in ancient Persian music. In this musical journey, classical guitar becomes a palette of colours for adapted Persian instrumental techniques and gestures as well as idiomatic colours from a far glance of the Renaissance and baroque period. These layers are all embedded and reframed into a new personal language. For me, transmission is a way to build musical bridges, but beyond that, also a way to build human bridges, and an opportunity to communicate with and understand other cultures... East or West, ancient or now, the essence of music has no border and time, in which Sâz is seeking to recreate.
