The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal won three Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles last night. The film The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which won the award for Best Screenplay at the 78^th Venice International Film Festival 2021 of La Biennale di Venezia, won three awards in the prestigious categories of Best Feature Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

La Biennale di Venezia wishes to congratulate Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is both the director and screenwriter of The Lost Daughter, a film that has also been nominated for three Academy Awards. 

This is the second time in a row, following the winner of the Golden Lion Nomadland by Chloé Zhao in 2021, that a film in competition at the Venice International Film Festival has won the Independent Spirit Awards in the categories of Best Film and Best Director.

The Independent Spirit Awards are the important American film awards conferred every year since 1986 in Los Angeles to promote independent cinema.

In The Lost Daughter, adapted from the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante and starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard, Leda (Colman), alone at a seaside resort, obsessively observes a young mother and her daughter on the beach. Troubled by the complicity in their relationship (and by their family, loud and sinister), Leda is overwhelmed by the memories of the apprehension, dismay and intensity she felt about her own maternity. An impulsive gesture catapults Leda into the strange and menacing universe of her own mind, in which she must come to terms with the nonconformist choices she made when she was a young mother and the consequences thereof.
