Charlie Says
Synopsis
A look at real life American psycho Charles Manson with an examination of the infamous Manson Family murders through the eyes of graduate student Karlene Faith as she works with three young, brainwashed women who were part of the cult. Initially given the death penalty for their involvement in the crimes, during which nine people were murdered including actress Sharon Tate, their sentences were ultimately commuted to life imprisonment. The film is a procedural that will focus on Faith’s time attempting to teach the three women, and on their personal transformations as they slowly grasp the reality of their crimes.
Director’s Statement
It is comforting to see the Manson girls as monsters, as “other”, as outliers to normal human experience. In fact the most disturbing thing about them is their ordinariness. How did these perfectly sane and likable young women come to commit such hideous crimes? “Kill your ego”, Charlie says. The film takes us with Leslie Van Houten through the cult experience step by step. First she is lured into what seems an ecstatic community, then subject to brainwashing that gradually erodes her individual will and conscience.
The violence when it happens is abrupt and horrifying, almost like a dream, followed by a slow and terrible awakening years later in prison.
