Jean-Luc Moulène produces photographic and three-dimensional works – referred to as Documents and Objects respectively – often in series that are years in the execution. His interest in production extends to industrial manufacture and 3D printing techniques, as well as handcrafts such as pottery and glass blowing. “Often I do things without any practical knowledge. I make one piece and move on to another one. I don’t need to dominate over materials. My objects are surfaces, with no inside or outside, only holes”, the artist has said. “I abandoned early on the idea that art is a personal expression. I engage in pression (pressure), not expression”. Moulène is interested in pressure of a different kind as well: that which comes from forcing objects and associations together to see what new meanings they might generate.
