Description
Unlanded presents two projects that apprehends rivers, lakes, seas, oceans are not topographical dividers but connectors. In What Is The Purpose Of Your Visit?—A Journey Towards The High Seas (2015) the artist undertakes a fourteen-hour journey across the Mediterranean Sea towards the high seas, where, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea declares, no state can claim sovereignty. She conceives this portable portion of the high seas as a moveable exception zone, as an embassy without nationality, in which our political, social, and economic status is paused. In Planisfero Politico (2017) and in the series of collages fragments of the world’s waters mask the land of different world maps, suggesting alternative images of the world where water becomes an instrument of de-territorialization and de-materialization and addresses the notion of citizenship, territory and sovereignty. This operation allows to subvert the modern conception of nation-state, which is linked to roots, soil, and land.
