The River Somes project is a contemporary example of river regeneration and re-naturation efforts. It aims to connect the diverse communities of the city of ClujNapoca in Romania, as well as to reconnect them to the local fauna and flora species that have been forced out from their natural habitat on the riverbanks. The project imagines the river as a new, active, social space for interrelating that operates across scales and programs. It defines how inhabitants of Cluj-Napoca interact among themselves and with their surrounding ecosystem. On a community scale, it becomes a space for its dwellers to gather and exchange ideas. On a territorial scale, it connects the city of Cluj-Napoca with every other territory watered by the stream as it flows to the Black Sea, such as the Somes River in Transylvania, the Tisza in Hungary and Serbia, and the Danube across Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine. This waterway makes the inhabitants of Cluj conscious of their role within a much larger community across their entire continent; it calls for global understanding and comradeship.
