Description
The Off Fence installation confronts the separation phenomenon as it playfully blocks access along a path with a barrier. It transforms this obstacle into an impulse of change. The objective is to initiate transformation within a playful context as one symbolically embraces the physicality of a problem. The freedom to enter the fence, to be drawn in further, to play the game and fearlessly dissolve the obstacle. The path is blocked, but the way is free. It only takes encouragement and mutual courage to overcome that which separates people. In this installation, visitors are confronted with an obstacle on the path leading them to it. They must deal with it if they wish to continue. They may give up, or they can choose to go around it, or they could walk through the obstacle. Either way, their decision, their reaction to this impediment, becomes symbolic.

A fence symbolises separation. Throughout history, various walls and fences, either physical, geographical, cultural or social, have divided the society. The theme is How will we live together?. Shall we, as a first step, state what divides us? What prevents us from reaching our desired state?

Every one of us was a child once. In the midst of adventure, you suddenly run into a gate.
This is the end of the way. The gate is locked, an old wall and behind it...
Only the brave ones, willing to break the rules, may come in.
For those who enter an unknown territory, lions and mysterious gardens await. Those without fear will start something new.
