Description
The Emergency Shelter for Refugees and Roma Community is a project commissioned by the non-profit organization Emmaüs Solidarité as part of a solution to the continuous influx of refugees into Paris. It is located in a disused water treatment plant in the suburban city of Ivry-sur-Seine. This large, no longer used, industrial site (90.000 m²) awaits a new urban project. The Emergency Shelter was built to house 400 people for a period of six months. This humanitarian program raises questions about the current state of the world and appears to challenge architects. The Emergency Shelter looks into architecture for basic needs while also engaging questions on how to design spaces for dignified living and with functional qualities to vulnerable populations coming from different cultures. The project is thought of as a town, a common habitat regardless of the geographic and national origins of its inhabitants. From its most public to its most intimate spaces, the shelter is designed for an easy transition into community life.
