Description
The notion of the accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in the United States has evolved over the recent past, from meaning an in-law accommodation—in support of multi-generational living in cities with minimal housing options—to being understood as a sustainable form of intensifying demographic diversity by attracting a rich cross-section of the socioeconomic spectrum. By strategically locating ADUs within underutilized urban lots and suburban backyards, inevitable densification is achieved through an infusion of tiny housing among existing units, rather than through the introduction of largescale apartment blocks. As it addresses housing needs, the ADU can be environmentally beneficial to its community and has the potential to enrich existing neighborhoods by providing economical housing for a variety of lifestyle choices. House+Plus is an approach to the ADU project with the following preconditions: mass customization; limited set of modular components; passive-house standards; and reconfigurable interior space. In essence, it is a case study of a house enclosure within which modular furniture defines space and life. Here, modularity encourages spatial configurations and compositional fenestration that freely responds to the specific needs of private life, just as it actively participates in forming and informing collective space.
