Music For Everyone: Variations on a Theme
Album
Description
Music For Everyone: Variations on a Theme. Drawing upon experimental music and Conceptual art, the exhibition refers to a series of concerts organised by the Singaporean Ministry of Culture in the 1970s, as Ang’s works form a counterpoint to state-prescribed and commonly held notions of art and music. The film Recorder Rewrite features children from diverse backgrounds performing a composition of their own, based on improvisation and unconventional uses of an instrument. Together with artworks that engage with various structures and contexts of music-making, the exhibition reveals how music can be the grounds for ideological contest, capable of accommodating state agendas while allowing for agency, ambiguity and dissonance.
