Synopsis

1974. Jim Hoffman is your average family man – hard-working pilot, father, doting husband. Oh, he’s also a drug trafficker. And when Jim is caught smuggling cocaine, FBI agent Tisa sees an opportunity to entrap his elusive supplier. Jim’s informant duties are side-tracked when he befriends his neighbour, motoring designer John DeLorean. Bedazzled by DeLorean, Jim finds himself in the inner circle at the launch of a car that promises to revolutionise the motor industry. But when DeLorean’s dream runs out of fuel, and Tisa’s nowhere near getting his guy, Jim is caught between two desperate men willing to do anything to succeed.

Director’s Statement

This is the story of a man who embodies ambiguity. A man so desperate to succeed, he gambled everything and lost: Jim Hoffman. But let’s start with DeLorean: eccentric and debonair, car designer and friend to the rich and famous. He opposed the auto oligarchy by striking out on his own, as America’s earliest celebrity CEO. He branded his lifestyle with his car. Enter, Jim Hoffman: a low-life convicted criminal turned FBI informant who happened to be DeLorean’s neighbour. He joined DeLorean’s gilded social scene by passing himself off as something else. I was fascinated by this toxic relationship. Two guys who needed to win so badly that it drove their friendship to a heart-breaking conclusion. It’s a universal story of betrayal, but it’s really about dishonesty and trust. And asks with a wink: how well do we really know our friends?
Was DeLorean a con man or a creative genius? Was Hoffman a scumbag or a friend whose past damaged those around him? I want the audience to enjoy a rock-n-roll adventure and make that decision themselves.
