Synopsis
An aspiring saxophonist and a singer meet in New York during the celebrations of the victory, at the end of the Second World War.
Director’s Statement
(...) The shoot was long, arduous and wild. A few people have written about it. I will just say that a movie came out of it. When New York, New York was released in the summer of 1977, it didn’t do as well as we had hoped. It was re-released that fall with one reel cut out of it to shorten the length, a terrible idea. A few years later, it was released again with the excised reel intact and now including the Happy Endings production number (inspired by Born in a Trunk from the 1954 version of A Star Is Born), which had been cut from the original release. This was the picture I had made.
I’m very glad to see this picture properly restored. We worked very hard to recreate the warmth and the luster of the old Hollywood pictures, and just as hard to get to a truthful portrait of two creative, driven people trying to make a life together.
