synopsis
In the outskirts of London, Portuguese couple and parents of three, Bela and Jota, struggle to make ends meet. When a misunderstanding arises at school with their deaf daughter, the British social services grow concerned for the safety of their children. The film portrays the tireless battle of these immigrant parents against the law to keep their family together.
director's statement
Listen felt urgent to me not only as a filmmaker but also as a mother. The shapes and shades of different sides of a story, like a dance in between the right and the wrong, interest me. Culture and life formats us to behave and to be categorised but nothing is exactly what it seems. It is not that simple. The capacity of positioning ourselves in someone else’s shoes paves the way for change. Absolute ways of evaluating mostly leave space for mistakes. Separation as a preventive measure is a question mark to my beliefs. Union, support and compassion achieve usually better results. This film is to me a painful journey on how we see, what we judge or believe and what is actually real.
