Starting in 2016, the Venice International Film Festival was one of the first film festivals in the world to demonstrate interest in Virtual Reality.
For the 2020 edition, Venice VR, the official Virtual Reality competition section of the Venice International Film Festival, will no longer be shown physically in Venice Lido on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio ( VR Island), but it will be available to enjoy entirely online, rebranded as Venice VR Expanded to reflect the shift to a 100% virtual exhibition, on a dedicated platform designed by VRrOOm, supported by HTC Viveport, Facebook’s Oculus and VRChat.

From 2nd to 12th September 2020, viewers will be able to experience the official selection and activities of Venice VR Expanded as follows:
FREE ACCESS (for viewers over 14 years-old):
• Access to 23 projects in Competition
• Access to the whole “Best of” section (9 projects)
• Access to the whole Biennale College Cinema VR section (4 projects)
From 2nd to 12th September 2020, viewers will be able to experience the official selection and activities of Venice VR Expanded as follows:
ACCREDITATION ACCESS (for viewers over 14 years-old):
Available to everyone accredited to the 77th Venice International Film Festival or through a dedicated VR Accreditation
Fee: € 100
VR accreditation gives the following benefits:
- Access to all the projects mentioned in the Free Access section
- Exclusive access to 6 projects in Competition on Facebook’s Oculus
- Exclusive access by reservation to 3 performance-based projects in Competition
- Exclusive access to the social programs, panels, networking and meetings
- Exclusive access to The Garden area inside the Venice VR Expanded Platform on VRChat where VR Accreditation holders can attend specialist VR events and panels, and network with fellow VR accredited holders, film festival accredited guests, VR Industry guests and selected VR artists and teams
- Exclusive access to daily panels and events taking place inside Venice VR Expanded platform
- Exclusive access to to “Meet the Creator” sessions moderated by Michel Reilhac and Liz Rosenthal
- Exclusive access to meetup events after the above panels
- Exclusive access to opening and closing events
- Dedicated hosts in the Venice VR Expanded platform to help welcome you and navigate the Virtual World
The Venice VR Expanded platform on VRChat will present an Exhibition Hall with a showcase of the selected projects and instructions on how to see them. The Venice VR Expanded will be available to be experienced as follows:
- 3 DOF projects (9) | Free Access on VR Chat, Viveport and Oculus TV
- 6 DOF projects (26) | Free Access on Viveport (25) and on VR Chat (1)
- 6 DOF projects (6) |VR Accreditation Access on Oculus
- Projects upon reservation (4) | VR Accreditation Access (3 projects) and Free Access (1 project) on dedicated platforms

To open up the possibility for global audiences to experience the Venice VR Expanded selection, La Biennale di Venezia is partnering with a number of institutions around the world to have them dedicate one of their public spaces to a Venice VR Expanded Lounge where visitors will be able to experience the immersive projects of the 77th VIFF Virtual Reality Expanded during the exact same period of the 77th Venice International Film Festival, from 2nd to 12th September 2020.
These venues make up the 2020 Venice VR Expanded – Satellite Programme network, supported by HTC Viveport, Facebook’s Oculus, VR Chat and VRrOOm.
