synopsis

Based on true events, the film explores the story of a concentration camp deportee from Spain who turned out to be fictitious. This is the account of the life of the immensely charismatic man who for years served as the self-elected speaker of the Spanish Association of Holocaust Victims, and who maintained, before the public and even within his own association, as well as within his family, a highly complex fabrication. He claimed to have been a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp—which turned out to be a lie.

directors' statement

In our eyes, one could say that Enric Marco is a chameleon. A distorting mirror. The shadow of a shadow. A man, as Nobel laureate Vargas Llosa defined him, “frightening and brilliant” (all at the same time). “Frightening,” we think, because he reminds us of the depths to which any of us might sink to gain the acceptance of others; and “brilliant” because, at least for a while, Enric Marco achieved his goal: to construct, in the eyes of others, the fiction of a triumphant life. At least during that time, the chameleon had found his perfect disguise. Only Enric Marco knows who Enric Marco is. But the most likely thing is that he is fooling himself too. Therefore, making this film about truth and lies, about deception and reality, can in itself generate an interesting reflection for the viewer on the very artifice that cinema represents. Is cinema, fiction, a valid tool for telling the truth? And it also allows us to use lies not only as a plot device but as a formal basis. Lies as content, but also as form.
