Mon inséparable

Mona lives with her adult son, Joël, in a small apartment in the Paris suburbs. Now in his early thirties, Joël is “slow” as they say. He works in a specialised facility. He is passionately in love with his coworker Océane, who is also disabled.
Mona, however, knows nothing of their relationship. When Océane becomes pregnant, a choice must be made, and the symbiotic bond between mother and son falters.

The proud, nervous silhouette of a mother, the uneven gait of her son, the blue eyes of his lover beckoning towards the open sea. Three bodies, three characters in search of freedom, while everything constrains and binds them. Mona has been taking care of her grown-up son Joël since childhood. This care is as much a gift as a curse, tying them together in a complex co-dependency. Joël and Océane are different. And yet, like everyone else, they desire and love each other, to the point of considering having a child. Who are we to judge their ability to take care of someone else? Mona’s gaze, tender and worried, reflects the abyss of my questions: what rights—and duties—do we have over each other? Over one’s bodies and lives?
