Synopsis

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

The original Beetlejuice is a very special film to me. And the idea of a sequel came up many times—there were various scripts written, too. But I always felt that if we were going to do it, it had to feel right, and with the blessing of Michael, Catherine and Winona. I wouldn’t want to do it unless they were all on board. I always identified with Lydia so I started thinking about what her life would be like—going from being a cool goth teenager to a grown adult. What happened to her 35 years later? What happens to all of us? Sometimes as you get older you lose a little bit of yourself, you go down a path, you take a journey, you have different relationships; all these things change you. I identified with Lydia then and I identify with her now. This new film is also very personal to me, partly because it has the same spirit as the first one—lots of improvisation, lots of practical effects, and lots of just doing what I really wanted to do. It reminded me of why I loved making movies in the first place. And the cast—not only Michael, Catherine and Winona but also Jenna, Justin, Monica, Willem—they all made it very special for me.
