Augusto Matraga is a violent farmer. Betrayed by his wife, he is ambushed by his enemies and left for dead. But he is saved and turns to religiosity. Augusto meets Joãozinho Bem Bem, a gangster who makes him experience an internal conflict, instigating the violent instincts of his personality. Matraga then begins to oscillate between his aggressive temperament and the mysticism that he can no longer abandon.
A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga perfectly captures the correlation between violence and mysticism. And in doing so, it reveals a fundamental facet of Brazilian society.
