Synopsis

The first movie in Japanese history to deal with lesbian love explicitly. A sweet and dangerous relationship between a married woman and a beautiful young lady. A masterpiece that embodies the aesthetics of Tanizaki’s literature.

Director's Statement

In many of the characters of Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s novels are people who risk their lives for a lifetime to love and be loved. The characters of Manji also make an unspeakable effort for love. They try to love and be loved, through elaborate schemes, tremendous sleight of hand, physical pleas, and every other means possible. It seems tragic and comedic, grotesque and beautiful. This striving for love reminds us of the diversity, complexity, richness, and strength of human beings and the depth of transformative life energy.
