synopsis

On the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Gian Maria Volonté, one of the most important and beloved actors in the history of Italian cinema, this film retraces his personal and artistic journey, enphasising his seminal and enduring influence on today’s most important performers. They, together with his family and friends, and with images, clips and footage never shown before, speak to his uniqueness, his relevance and the themes that accompanied and defined his artistic journey and political activism.

director's statement

Francesco Rosi used to say: “We all felt part of a great adventure, making life on screen feel alive. Ours is a special profession, if you do it with passion you can’t get rid of it”; his “commandments” are very similar to those of Gian Maria Volonté. An upstanding man, meticulous to the point of obsession, politically passionate, admired by colleagues, audiences and critics. A consistent and passionate actor, who established happy professional partnerships with directors such as Montaldo, Petri and Rosi, able to play a magnificent gallery of characters. His choices were always guided by the intent to portray figures that resonated with his curiosity and with the desire to return fragments of a precise historical mosaic. I tried to outline the profile of this complex and fascinating man, embarking on a journey that put me in contact with important figures of our contemporary cinema.
