synopsis

Free UR Head is a public participatory choreography project employing custom-developed real-time XR technology. It started with the concept of bringing people together and playing with VR technology, making it more accessible and communal. What if we could direct the VR audience’s heads into a shared choreography? We invite you to join this unprecedented, large-scale immersive performance. Seated with VR headsets, you will partake in an impromptu, unrehearsed choreography. The experience will unfold in the presence of both intentional and casual viewers, who can witness the choreography evolve in real time. Through exploring collective movement with virtual reality, Free UR Head questions and pushes the boundaries of orchestrated collective behaviour in interaction with digital technology.

Main Creator’s Statement

Developing Free UR Head (FUH), I realise it is multidimensional, reflecting on social needs for connection both online and offline, as well as our relationship with technology. It also explores ancient rituals of coming together through dance and prayer to confront fear or celebrate. I am intrigued by the potential of XR to bring people together to create a contemporary allegory, and how it will shape FUH in a different space and setting, influenced by cultural context and a diverse audience. What conversations will it spark among the public? And how will this influence my future work on the broader theme of collective movement?
