The guardians of jade mountain

The story centres on an unlikely friendship between Chief Aliman of the Bunun clan (Taiwan’s indigenous people) and the Japanese anthropologist Ushinosuke Mori during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. This experience guides spectators along the journey of these two extraordinary characters, highlighting their shared respect for Jade Mountain and the way it forged their bond.

In this project, I invite visitors to immerse themselves in a faithful VR reproduction of the Jade Mountain environment. This representation is underpinned by Mori’s research into the flora and fauna, with sketches and research notebooks archived at the National Museum of Taiwan. In contrast, the overall narrative is composed of animated shadows, as if these shadows had remained imprinted in the Jade Mountain environment, bearing witness to the events that took place there. This has been preserved through its ability to deliver a powerful message across generations, making it relevant both on an individual level and within the unique geopolitical context of Taiwan.
