Synopsis

Riven is a first-person, single-player experience where you uncover a story of intrigue, betrayal, and a civilization teetering on the brink of collapse by solving intricate environmental puzzles. Atrus—rescued in the previous game Myst—enlists the help of the player to free his wife from his power- hungry father, Gehn: due to Gehn’s destructive rule, the world is slowly falling apart. Riven rewards careful observation. The player is challenged by cunning puzzles, revealed in the environment, and deftly woven throughout its narrative. The player is able to experience Riven like never before, with free movement through a real-time 3D environment, including the optional ability to play in VR. This brand-new, re-imagined, and expanded version offers a deeper story, new captivating visuals, and a journey that stays true to the original release while also building on a new breathtaking world.

Main Creator’s Statement

Revisiting Riven has been an incredible journey. Working alongside Richard Vander Wende, with input from my brother Robyn, and world building by our Cyan Worlds team, we’ve breathed new life into our beloved 1997 creation. We strove to preserve the intricate storytelling that made the original so special, while harnessing today’s technology to elevate the experience. Exploring Riven in real-time 3D is something we could only dream of in 1997. We’ve carefully expanded some aspects, hoping to surprise even our most dedicated fans, while staying true to the spirit of the original. The positive reception tells us we’ve struck the right balance between honoring our past and embracing the future.
