Description

And if... It's a story of "what if" that guides Trajal Harrell, the Silver Lion of the Biennale Danza 2024, in the performance installation Sister or He Buried the Body. Always interested in reimagining the past beyond chronological, geographical, and cultural distance, Harrell investigates one of the founding fathers of Butoh dance, Tatsumi Hijikata, in search of a connection with Kathrine Dunham, an Afro-American anthropologist and choreographer who reportedly shared Hijikata's study in Tokyo. Drawing from vogueing and blending it with Butoh, Trajal Harrell dances on an improvised runway of woven grass mats, on a journey through the history of contemporary dance that makes the body the center of collective memory.
