Two new collateral events
La Biennale di Venezia has announced that the Venice International Film Festival will add two new international collateral awards: the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Award and the Fundación Casa Wabi – Mantarraya (Mexico) Award. Both will be bestowed upon filmmakers at the Venice Film Festival and provide winners with residency opportunities.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) Award will be presented to three filmmakers (director, producer) from the Orizzonti category awarded for Best Film, Best Director and the Special Jury Prize, who will participate from January 2-23, 2019, in a three-week long residency program in Los Angeles. The program will consist of master classes and workshops in partnership with Film Independent. The selected filmmakers will be mentored individually by tutors to hone their skills, and will attend screenings and educational events hosted by Film Independent. Three other filmmakers will be selected for the same programme by the Filmmaker Lab of the Toronto Film Festival.

The Fundación Casa Wabi – Mantarraya (Mexico) prize will be awarded to the director winner of the Award for a Debut Film of the 75th Venice Film Festival, and will consist in a month-and-a-half residency at Casa Wabi (Puerto Escondido). The chosen filmmaker will have the opportunity to develop a project in collaboration with the artists in residence and nearby communities. The projects are designed to encourage interaction, exchange, and dialogue across other disciplines and within the community.
