The President, the Director General, the Board of Directors, the Director of the Venice International Film Festival and La Biennale di Venezia remember the director, screenwriter and actor Giuliano Montaldo with deep emotion and sympathy. With him goes one of the great masters of Italian cinema and an emblematic figure who was civically engaged and the author of well-known masterpieces such as Sacco e Vanzetti (1971), Giordano Bruno (1974) and Marco Polo (1977).
Giuliano Montaldo has been connected to the Venice Film Festival since his surprising debut in 1961 with Tiro al piccione, a film that was restored in 2019 for the section Venice Classics, whose jury he was head of back in 2014.
Later on, Giuliano Montaldo took part in the Festival with other acclaimed films: Gli occhiali d’oro (1987), that was awarded the Osella d'oro for the production and costume design, and Tempo di uccidere (1989), based on the Strega awarded novel by Ennio Flaiano. In 2008, he presented the documentary L’oro di Cuba.
