Generous Listening Symposium
Generous Listening Symposium, Vuslat Foundation Special Event, will be held on Saturday 30 October 2021 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale, Venice. What suggestions and what kind of spatial arrangements are required for ‘generous listening’?

Generous Listening Symposium, organized as part of the Meetings on Architecture programme of the Biennale Architettura 2021, and in collaboration with Vuslat Foundation, aims to raise awareness and spread the practices of ‘generous listening’ both to oneself, to one another, and to our environment. A sort of continuation of the monumental installation presented by Giuseppe Penone at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, The Listener, located at the Gaggiandre of the Arsenale, which represents a symbolic prompt of the potential generous listener within each of us.
The Generous Listening Symposium will thus aim to define and explore the idea of listening, with a keynote by artist Giuseppe Penone, and talks with Chus Martínez, art historian, writer and curator-at-large at Vuslat Foundation; Vuslat Doğan Sabancı, Founder of Vuslat Foundation; Francesco Bergamo, architect working on sound ecology and contemporary sound practices; Hashim Sarkis, Curator of the Biennale Architettura 2021; İnci Eviner, contemporary artist; Kenann McKenzie, director of the Generous Listening and Dialogue (GLAD) Center at Tufts University’s Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life; and Caroline A. Jones, Professor in the History, Theory, and Criticism section, Department of Architecture at MIT.

Biennale Educational
La Biennale di Venezia and Vuslat Foundation have also created a special theme-based tour titled Architecture as Generous Listening. Exploring and uncovering the significance of the aspect of listening in certain architectural projects at the Biennale Architettura 2021, this tour is available to adults, families, as well as high schools and university groups. This is an educational activity dedicated to the relationship between architecture, listening and acknowledgement, and addresses the theme of listening as a privileged form of encounter by unfolding along three dimensions: the corporeal and biological dimension; the domestic and interpersonal dimension; the communitarian and social dimension. Furthermore, participants are encouraged to take part in a ten-minute special listening exercise which will be accessible through a QR code available at the Exhibition.
