Bestiari, erbari, lapidari
synopsis
Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari is a docu-encyclopedia, divided into three acts, each of which deals with a single subject: animals, plants, stones. The film is a tribute to those “unknown” and in some ways truly alien worlds, made of animals, plants and minerals, which we too often take for granted, but with which we should be in constant dialogue since they constitute the essential part of our existence on planet Earth. Told through three distinct storytelling techniques, the acts of the film trace a single dramatic arc. Bestiari is a found-footage on how and why cinema has obsessively represented animals; Erbari, on the other hand, is a poetic observational documentary from inside Padua’s Botanical Gardens; Lapidari, finally, an industrial and emotional film about the transformation of stone into collective memory. Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari is a sentimental journey through the culture, science and art of our old continent.
directors' statement
Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari, in its entirety, proceeds like an essay film: the video camera pointed at what happens before our eyes and ears. The story has a narrative structure that combines rational and emotional thinking. We believe that our task is to “re-invent” a vision and a representation of reality and try to establish vital relationships between the elements that make up the shots of the work. Each viewer has the task of enriching the film with their own baggage of experiences, interests, readings or cinematic visions.
