Nonostante
synopsis
A man spends peaceful days at the hospital where he’s been for some time: with few worries, responsibilities, or problems, sheltered from everything and everyone, this seems to him the best way to live. In fact, even though some of his ward mates feel trapped, to the man the hospital guarantees unparalleled freedom. This precious routine flows smoothly until a new patient arrives: she is restless, angry, does not accept anything about being hospitalised, especially the unwritten rules, and only wants to leave as soon as possible. She wants to live properly or die. The man is overwhelmed by her fury and at first tries to defend himself, but then decides to welcome something that is incomprehensible to him. This encounter will make him understand that, if you truly face up to your heart and emotions, there is no place to hide.
director's statement
A love story like those that explode all of a sudden at a school party one afternoon at a stranger’s house, where you fall in love for no real reason and realise that life from that day on will never be the same. We wanted to start from here, because telling a love story may be more difficult than living one. For this reason we needed a very simple, very classic score, like the parties we had when we were thirteen, but played in an almost abstract world, where the condition of our nameless characters is a metaphor for the moments of existence in which standing still, motionless, may even become a form of defense against the shocks of life. Our “Regardless” (the “Nonostante” of the title) is this, an adverb become noun, a population of individuals who attempt to fight suffering only when they encounter love.
