Articulated as The Fold, the design of the pavilion takes inspiration from the distinctive physical and social dimensions of the residual open spaces embedded within the numerous densely populated informal settlements that characterise the urban fabric of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest and most populated city. Although severely confined, these open spaces remain full of life and vitality, not only serving as thoroughfares, but functioning as dynamic arenas for interaction, dissemination of information, exchange of ideas, and play. Inconceivably, they find ways to make enough room for everyone, displaying an overwhelming sense of community that builds and thrives on consensus. In absence of customary parks and playgrounds, they remain free for all, considerately shared by those residing around and along them. Evasive at first, the pavilion relies on mutual understanding to unfold into an accommodating spatial experience. Layered with ideas of limitation, interdependency and adaptability, it invites visitors to gather, coordinate, and activate the space in harmony.
