Description
The overall theme of this project is the resilience of Venice addressed in two different and complementary ways. The first focus is on the physical and morphological components of the resilience. The challenge for the future is to insure resilience to global warming and the danger of unprecedented sea level rise. The completion of the four barriers known as MOSE and their successful testing are the major step to protect the city and the lagoon from flooding as sea levels rise in the foreseeable future. The second focus is on the urban aspects of resilience through the walkability, the accessibility of the historical center of the city, and the functions on the ground of the historic center. Resilience of Venice presents a map that underlines the projects carried out in the lagoon after the high water of 1966 by the different institutions involved (state, region, and municipality). The idea is to highlight a perspective of the physical and social fragility of the city, of the continuous interventions it witnesses at the different scales, and of the great economic investment. The resilient capacity of Venice, if properly managed, can reverse the trend that the city bears
