Synopsis
In current times, Atahualpa works at the construction of a road to the Oriente. In the region there is a rumor of a vast treasure hidden at the beginning of the colony. One afternoon, after his girlfriend Rocío has left the city, Atahualpa feels a provocation, a distant call that takes him back a hundred years.
Director’s Statement
I set out with the idea of filming in a very specific place, a route that I have traveled throughout my life: the Aloag-Santo Domingo Road, until recently the only passage between the highlands and the coast, in Ecuador. The great many contrasts in its scarce 100 kilometers have always obsessed me. Surely, a similar journey was made by our ancestors. I like to imagine what the landscape would have looked like from the back of a donkey, what it would have meant to set out on a journey on foot more than a week-long and posing great dangers, what thoughts would have crossed the minds of those who walked over this unknown land.
Al Oriente is to stop at the edge of the road; to be there, in the skin of Atahualpa, a man who works on a road that seeks to make its way to Oriente. A complex historical legacy falls upon him and challenges him. At a time of disillusion and economic crisis in the country, Atahualpa wonders about his identity and, very concretely, about his name.
