Over the years, La Biennale di Venezia has developed a stronger and stronger commitment to educational initiatives. Its proposals have addressed the audiences of its Exhibitions and Festivals. They have particularly focused on universities, schools, families, professionals, and art lovers.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

On the occasion of the 58th International Art Exhibition and the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, 82,819 persons have participated in educational initiatives: 48,006 of them were young or very young visitors involved in educational programmes.

In 2022, a large educational offer will accompany the 59th International Art Exhibition as well. Initiatives will address individuals as well as groups of students, children, youngsters, grown-ups, families, professionals, businesses, and universities. All activities will pivot on an the active involvement of participants; they will be conducted, as always, by professional educators selected and trained by La Biennale di Venezia. Educational activities fall into two main types: Tours and Workshops / Interactions.

The initiatives

· Tour activities accompany visitors through the exhibition projects and unique venues of the 59th International Art Exhibition. They have an open and participatory structure. They are particularly suited to art lovers, grown-ups, universities and high-schools. They fall into three sub-categories: guided tours, in-depth tours, and theme-based tours. Guided tours introduce visitors to the main themes of the International Art Exhibition and illustrate a significant selection of projects; in-depth tours focus on a smaller selection of projects and provide different perspectives and multi-layered information about them; theme-based tours follow specific threads in the exhibition and focus on specific themes and issues.

· Workshops and Interactions address different sorts of audiences, but mainly focus on young and very young visitors, schools, and families. They stimulate the creativity of participants and their ability to experience exhibition projects from different perspectives. They also include Italian “PCTO school programmes”, which involve participants in the designing of educational activities with the supervision of La Biennale’s Education Staff.

They have different formats: IT-workshops, which make use of multimedia technologies and devices; multidisciplinary workshops, which cross-fertilise inputs from visual arts, music, theatre, and dance (in particular on the occasion of the relevant Festivals of performing arts); art & science workshops designed in collaboration with CNR-ISMAR (National Research Council—Institute of Marine Sciences); creative writing workshops and philosophical workshops, combining approaches from very different disciplines; verbal workshops, which analyse exhibition projects with the help of questionnaires; hands-on activities stimulating creative interaction; playful initiatives for families.

Special projects

La Biennale’s education offer is enriched by special projects, which focus on the challenges of creativity and innovation and offer the opportunity of approaching the Exhibition themes from specific professional interests. Those projects are particularly interesting for businesses and professionals; they focus on the Exhibition themes as opportunities to update and amplify competences are sensibilities.

Accessibility

Special initiatives are also dedicated to fragile audiences. They address groups and individuals who may be members of therapeutical communities, or centres providing psychological or social support to people who suffer from various forms of personal or social fragility. They aim to make the visual arts more accessible to persons who have disabilities, whose physical or mental health is not stable, who have addictions, or suffer from various forms of marginalisation.

Special activities are dedicated to hypo-sighted or blind visitors as well as to deaf visitors.
