Synopsis

Due to the growing lack of communication and the sudden tedium in their relationship, Giovanni Pontano, a successful writer, and his wife Lidia realise that their love is now dead, after just a few years of marriage. They go visit dying friend Tommaso at the clinic where he’s hospitalised. The visit produces opposite reactions in Giovanni and Lidia. That night, they attend a party at the sumptuous villa of an industrialist, who offers Giovanni a very profitable job. He stalls for time, and out of boredom starts flirting with Valentina, the industrialist’s daughter. Lidia mirrors this behaviour by indulging in a game of seduction with another party guest. News of Tommaso’s death darkens the mood even further. Dawn creeps on Giovanni and Lidia in the villa’s park.

Director's Statement

At various stages, while working on the story, I kept stripping it of everything that was there before; all other characters have almost disappeared, leaving only the two main ones just as bare as you see them. I also eliminated all the facts that had made the story richer, and were somewhat more precise and more interconnected, so that it could run its course in full and possibly reach an internal “suspense”, no longer bound to the outside other than through their actions, which in turn match their thoughts and anxieties.
