Synopsis

In a timeless conflict between two warring families, the stakes are cosmic. Brothers turn against brothers as both sides are divided by anger and revenge. All are descendants of kings and gods and vie for supremacy. They should live in harmony but their thirst for power leads to a war that threatens the very fabric of the Universe.

Director's Statement

In 1974, Jean-Claude Carrière and I spent an evening with a great Sanskrit scholar who told us about a 3000-year-old Indian poem called The Mahabharata. We immediately realised that this work had something to say to our contemporaries and we came to the clear decision that we had to share this masterpiece with others. In 1988, after three years of touring our nine-hour stage version, we decided to stop performing. But the demand was still very strong. The Mahabharata itself wanted to continue telling its own story, all over the world. So the next step was to make it into a film.
