Synopsis
Havana, December 1990. René González, a Cuban airline pilot, steals a plane and escapes the country, leaving behind his beloved wife and daughter. He begins a new life in Miami, soon joined by other Cuban dissidents, all working towards the destabilisation of the Castro regime. Based on a true story.
Director’s Statement
Politics, as Shakespeare wrote about life itself, is a story full of noise and fury, as told by an idiot, that means nothing. Yet, it is according to those passions that men live. And die. The conflicts of the Cold War have defined my generation and shaped the contours of our present. The embers remain bright, and one gets easily burnt. It seems to me that we have now enough of a historical distance to confront it. Certainly not with detachment, but with the freedom, and the rigor, to portray it with both benevolence and vigilance. Without being fooled by the masks of ideology. Modern history interests me through the lenses of its humanity, how it reveals in its actors the intimate truth that define their actions, their faith, and their errors. Is there a reason we do what we do? Who can be a judge? Carried away by the Wheel of history, prey to their demons and illusions, yet also victims of both, the players in the drama of politics are our brothers as we are also their accomplices.
