Una tuta spaziale connette i livelli più estremi, quello del corpo e quello del pianeta, rivelando l’intimità e la fragilità della vita umana che le collega. Una tuta spaziale consente agli esseri umani di raggiungere un punto di osservazione da cui possiamo comprendere l’impercettibile verità della geometria terrestre. Viviamo sulla Terra, sostenuti da un sottile strato di atmosfera che poggia sul globo con la stessa leggerezza di un tessuto. All’interno di questa sottile membrana, le emissioni di carbonio degli esseri umani hanno causato una crisi climatica. Lo scorso anno l’aerosol e i flussi d’aria a livello globale, hanno esteso il contagio a tutto il mondo. (Una “pandemia”, da pan-demos, ovvero “tutto il popolo”). Questa installazione mostra frammenti della storia della tuta spaziale all’interno di oggetti che sono anche ambienti. Sovrapponendo il concetto di cimelio a quello di cura, essi diventano strumenti protettivi tanto quanto oggetti da esposizione. Ciò che è più sacro qui è il ruolo attento, adattivo e pratico che deve svolgere l’architettura, in maniera intima ed efficace, su ogni livello della nostra ecologia umana.

Image 1 – How will we live together?
The movement of human life into Space is held out by techno-gurus from Elon Musk to Peter Thiel as a way to both fulfill our full human and technological potential, and to rise above the complex, shared realities of life on Earth. But these are fantasies, in the end, about how we can not live together; how an elite can depart, opt out, and choose not to repair our relationships with each other, across both societies and species here on Earth. The spurious assumptions at the base of such ideas are belied, most poetically, by the fragile realities of the interface between the body and the heavens.

Hands are a unique challenge in pressure-suits because their nature is so far from the hard, immobile spheres that pressurized environments want to be. Ironically, many buildings and architectures that try to represent the world do so by creating hard domes and spheres, and putting our bodies inside of them.
