La Terra è un’architettura. Essa è in costante metamorfosi, una trasformazione che interessa in particolare quello strato relativamente sottile che occupa gli ultimi 15 chilometri più esterni del suo raggio di 6371 chilometri. Il suo corpo viene continuamente formato e trasformato dalle azioni e reazioni di tutti coloro che, viventi o non viventi, lo animano. Gli esseri umani sono una delle forze maggiori che partecipano a questo enorme cantiere, comune a tutti gli elementi materiali e agli organismi viventi. L’architettura deve essere considerata da questa prospettiva di interdipendenza. Linee, superfici, volumi costruiscono i frammenti di arcipelaghi abitati, condivisi dall’uomo e da tutte le altre forze terrene. Ogni trasformazione di questo terreno comune viene registrata nel complesso sedimentario in cui si mescolano rocce, terra, residui organici e manufatti umani. Ogni edificio è una sommità, uno sperone o un promontorio, una depressione, una piega, un fossato. Ogni centro urbano, ogni città è una catena montuosa, un bacino o una valle. Ogni costruzione fa parte del mondo. L’architettura ha una forza interiore simile a quella tellurica che è una necessità geologica. L’architettura non è ciò che viene collocato e posizionato sulla Terra dagli esseri umani, ma è il perpetuo modellamento della Terra. L’architettura è la forma che emergerà in eterno dallo stretto abbraccio tra gli esseri viventi e la Terra. L’architettura è una Terra.

The piece The Earth is an Architecture is the product of a fundamental research, conducted by TVK since 2015. As architects, we are now exploring new representations to reflect the continuous reshaping of the Earth, highlighted by current research on living matter. After being flat, then a sphere, today the Earth is an architecture. 

Within this vision, this “fictional Earth” is exploring the concept of infrastructure as a mediation between humanity and the Earth. Infrastructures do not colonize the ground but create liveable commons. They allow societies to inhabit the planet by anchoring themselves in its geological, biological and geographical history. Inspired by realistic situations, the piece presents a diversity of infrastructural archetypes arranged into fictional continents. It tells the story of lines, surfaces, volumes, fragments, that build together a set of archipelagos. The transformations they generate on the ground are registered in the geological layers represented in their three dimensions.

This “situated manifesto” opens the horizon for new architectural fictions. It invites us to take the measure of planetary dynamics at work and to participate in the perpetual construction site shared by earthly matters and living beings.
